Mixed hybridization systems : Towards the "after C60"

Axis 3 — Giant calixarenes : a new family of macromolecular objects

Associate researcher : Cyril Martini (NOVECAL)

As a part of our research program devoted to the study of calixarene chemistry, we discovered that some specifically functionalised phenols allows for the formation of very large calixarene-type cyclic oligomers, containing up to 100 phenolic sub-units. These unprecedented « giant calixarenes » are easily obtained according to simple one or two-steps processes.

Synthesis of giant calixarenes

These giant calixarenes are obtained in high yields, and their synthesis was upscaled up to a 500g amounts (laboratory scale). They were characterized by a full set of analytical tools (NMR, SEC, SEC-MALS, MALDI-MS, etc…).

Surprisingly, they can also be obtained in the solid state, without any kind of stirring/grinding mechanism. This points to a new solid-state organic chemistry.

This new family of macromolecular objects opens promising perspectives in such diverse areas as materials reinforcement, vectorisation, single molecule micellar objects etc…
