Caracteristics

  • The AFM is a local probe microscope which allows us to visualize the topography of the surface of a sample thanks to probe-sample interactions (electrical, optical, mechanical, magnetic, capacitive, thermal, acoustic, chemical, etc.).
  • The actuator is a piezoelectric ceramic on which a voltage is sent → a mechanical deformation of very low amplitude.
  • The resolution is related to the size of the apex of the tip (lateral ~ 10 nm; vertical a few angstroms).
  • 3 operating modes:
    • contact mode (static)
    • non-contact mode (dynamic)
    • intermittent contact mode (wide amplitude)
